A clogged or broken sprayer will ruin the job. However, the wrong paint consistency is also a critical problem. The best way to prepare paint is to clean all materials and test several different consistencies of paint to determine the best mixing ratio. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Solvent cleaner Compressed air Soft brush Paint sprayer Soft cloths Paint thinner Auto body paint Paint stirrer Step by Step : 1 Soak the paint spray nozzle in a solvent cleaning solution for about an hour. This will loosen any stuck paint inside the nozzle and make it easy to clean. 2 Spray compressed air through the paint sprayer nozzle to loosen paint particles. Use a soft brush to scrub paint particles from around the nozzle. If there is any paint stuck inside the nozzle, poke a toothpick through the hole to clean the nozzle. 3 Clean the rest of the paint sprayer with a solvent cleaner and soft cloths. Soak the tubing in a bucket of solvent cleaner for about an hour. Wipe out the inside of the spray container with a soft cloth. 4 Set the spray pressure on the spray gun. For large areas, 15 to 20 PSI is needed. For smaller areas, less pressure, such as 10 PSI, may work better. Test the pressure by spraying onto a scrap piece of cardboard. 5 Adjust the thickness of the paint. Stir the paint with a paint stirrer to remove any air bubbles and mix the color. Most automotive paint is too thick to spray evenly without the use of paint thinner. How much you have to thin the paint will vary depending on the brand and type of paint. 6 Start with a 3-to-1 ratio of paint to thinner. Mix the paint and the thinner with a paint stirrer until the consistency is even. Place a small amount of paint in the paint sprayer and spray the paint onto the cardboard. The paint should be thin enough to spray evenly but not so thin as to run down the cardboard. 7 Adjust the paint-to-thinner ratio until you are satisfied with the coverage you get. Add more thinner or paint as necessary to achieve the right consistency. Once you have the correct ratio and a clean paint sprayer, the paint is prepared.
